Mascot Research

My Character:
golden retriever puppy. cute, friendly, lovable, loyal, soft, playful. most likely used as a mascot for a company that targets kids, but could work for any dog-lover audience. possible uses include: pet shop, retail store for kids, animal shelter, cartoon show, animal rights or related non-profit company.

Who doesn't love a puppy?

Research:
Below are a few well-known cartoon dog characters, all known for being lovable and friendly. The are good examples to get an idea of how I would like to characterize my puppy.

www.klru.org
clifford.jpg
Clifford is a friendly puppy that grows into an oversized dog. He grew so big that his family had to leave the city for a house with more space. He is caring and selfless and is always looking out for others. He is very well-liked in his community because he uses his large size to help people.

www.wikipedia.org
Snoopy_wwi_ace_lb.jpg
Snoopy is Charlie Brown's dog. He is very human-like and sometimes seems to forget he is a dog. His thoughts are expressed through his actions and through "thought bubbles." His favorite thing to do is pretend to be someone else. His best known alter-ego is the "flying ace" which is where he sits on top of his doghouse with a scarf, cap and goggles and pretends to fly an airplane.

pluto.jpg
Pluto is Mickey Mouse's dog, modeled off of an English Pointer breed.  he is cheerful and adventurous, and communicates through barks, grunts and facial expressions. He is easily frightened and often gets jealous of Mickey thinking about getting another pet. he is a good example of a friendly, outgoing and lovable character.

www.caninest.org
scooby-doo.jpg
Scooby Doo is Shaggy's sidekick, but he is really more of the main character of the comic series. He is also friendly, funny, and lovable. Unlike Pluto and Snoopy, Scooby Doo actually communicates with words. Episodes always involve ghosts and monsters, but the show is comical and not meant to actually be scary. Scooby Doo is a goofy character, and not meant to be a realistic portrayal of a dog.

Fantasy Project Research

I decided that for my fantasy project I want to do something with pirates. I plan to assemble the some of the images below to create the book cover.

Research 2: Horror

1. Cockroaches
Via blogspot.com

Coackroaches gross me out more than any other inspect, especially a pile of them.

2. Flames
Via wordpress.com
http://lifefromthestep.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/flames.jpg

The idea of anything burning frightens me; I used to have nightmares about fires. Add a scary face with burning flesh to the fire and its especially frightening.

3. Shadows
Via wordpress.com
http://hancockadvent.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/dude-walking-in-darkness.jpg

This image is spooky because there is just enough light to see a mysterious figure walking towards the camera, but the face is not visible and the intentions of the figure are unknown. There is a lot of contrast in the photo, adding to the mystery.

4. Open-mouthed snake
Via comp.urk.edu
http://comp.uark.edu/~sbeaupre/P1010006.JPG
I have always hated snakes, especially large ones like boa constrictors that strangle their prey or the kind that swallow their prey whole. I don't like their scaly flesh, sneaky, slithering bodies, or their mouths that open abnormally wide for the size of their face. This snake with its mouth wide open, ready to attack, seems perfect for a horror advertisement.

5. Zombies
Via marcilagan.com
http://marcilagan.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/zombie-crawlers1.jpg
Zombies are a classic horror film staple. They are hideous, flesh-eating creatures coming back from the dead. These particular zombies have sharp claws for fingers and fangs so large they take up their face; it appears that they have no other facial features.

Now that I am done making this blog I am sure I will have nightmares about everything I just posted, especially the snakes and the zombies.

Scary Face 1

This face is spooky because of the pale skin, red eyes, and yellow teeth. It has an angry, aggressive expression, like it is hungry or about to attack. It is a representation of what a demon might look like.

Scary Face 2
Via izismile.com
http://img.izismile.com/img/img2/20090109/skilled_photoshop_12.jpg
This image is spooky because of the girl's scabbed flesh, scars, and her eye that has rolled back to reveal only the white part. Her normal eye seems to be staring right at you with anger, and the darkness of the photo adds mystery.

Research 2

1. Butterflies
A. Via flickr.com
http://www.dipity.com/tickr/Flickr_paperhearts_femalephotographer/

B. Via si.edu
Papilionidae butterfly,  Kjell B. Sandved, Smithsonian Instituition.
http://www.si.edu/Encyclopedia_SI/nmnh/buginfo/bfly02.gif
I was drawn to the first butterfly because of its unique shape, eye-catching orange hue, and thick black stripes. I chose the second butterfly because I like its aqua green color and the contrast of the bright inner color and sharp black outer edges. I was also drawn to the idea of using these two images together in a project because the bright orange and aqua green contrast together nicely.

2. Sunflower
Via flickr.com
Photographer: Anthony Thomas
http://www.flickr.com/photos/anthonythomas/1084445061/
I chose this photo because the sunflower is my favorite flower. I love its bright yellow color and large size, and I think that sunflowers are a classic way to communicate a sunny, happy mood.

3. Seashells

B. Via shannonamidon.com
Photographer: Shannon Amidon
http://www.shannonamidon.com/gallery/electroforms/Clam-Shell.jpg

I chose seashells because I love the beach and because they make me think of summer. I like seashells because each has their own unique shape and color. I chose the first seashell because I like the off-white/tan color and ideal conch shell shape, and the second shell because I was drawn to its dark reddish brown hue and interesting texture.

4. Strawberry
Via photobucket.com
http://media.photobucket.com/image/strawberry/thomasc_03/strawberry.jpg

I chose a strawberry because it is my favorite fruit, whether served fresh by itself or mixed into a frozen drink, smoothie, or fruit salad. I also think strawberries are very visually appealing, with their bright red bodies contrasted by a fresh green stem. Strawberries are associated with spring and summer when they are at their peak growing season.

5. Clouds
Via freeimagesarchive.com
http://www.freeimagesarchive.com/data/media/215/16_sky.jpg
I chose this image because it is a fairly simple way to fill in space with a variety of color and shapes. I love looking at a blue sky with the sun peeking through white fluffy clouds.

1. Breakdancer
breakdancing requires a full range of motion and a large space to move around freely without a specific plan or choreography.

2. Olympic Runner: Shalane Flannagan
Distance runners who compete at such a high level require hours of training per day and very few breaks throughout the year. They must constantly pay attention to their diet, sleep well, and do everything they can to stay healthy and avoid injuries, which they are extremely prone to when putting such high stress on the body.

3. Swinging in Summertime

4. Pole Vault
Professional pole vaulters must be very flexible yet also have a lot of muscle mass. They have no fear of heights or fear of falling, even though they fall many times during practice and risk a lot of energy. When done correctly, pole vaulters can make the task of vaulting themselves several feet into the air seem effortless and graceful.

5. Baseball
Baseball players require a different type of fitness than many other athletes; they more upper body strength, yet they also need the speed to round the bases quickly and very quick reflexes. In this picture, 2011 World Series MVP David Freese celebrates while running around the bases after hitting the game-winning home run of World Series Game 6.
